Catherine's Cadeau • Book Cover

ISBN: 1933896221

A historical fiction in which a cajun girl relives the plight of her ancestors. I was honored to take on this project, as both the clients and subject matter are dear to me. There is relatively little fiction based around cajun culture, and I really wanted the cover to grab both the niche cajun crowd and those unfamiliar with the history. I chose to use a limited but very vibrant palette, with a strong sense of mystery to draw curiosity. I focused on the supernatural aspect of the book to create a dramatic, yet ethereal scene.

Persuasive Speaking • Book Cover

ISBN: 9-781598-712759

Due to the positive reception of the book cover for Catherine's Cadeau, the Speech Communication Department at Sam Houston State University (where I received my Bachelor's) asked me to do the cover for their new textbook, as their usual vendor was not meeting their needs. Given 2 brochures of info and the color palette of the department website, I came up with a design that looked professional and used imagery to highlight their deparment slogan: "The Key to Success".

Web Design

I have always been a fan of simple, clean sites. I also tend toward darker sites, as they are easier on the eyes. I wanted my portfolio to be very accessible and easy to navigate. For the main imagery, I went with a thoughtful-looking photo taken by my wife on the beach, then used that as the basis for the site color scheme. Though the site accomplished my initial goals, I felt it really didn't show off enough of my abilities. Follow the link above to view the archived pages.

Web Design

Standard Site Template

This is done during my employment with Reynolds and Reynolds. Reynolds caters specifically to car dealerships and hosts over 8,000 web sites for dealers around the country. Dealerships can choose from a number of website templates that can then have custom imagery and content applied. I designed this theme to be flexible, easy to navigate and easy on page-load, as well as portray a professional, modern look. It fits within the strict guidelines of the Reynolds CMS structure.

Web Design

Portal Site Template

Also done during my employment with Reynolds and Reynolds. Dealerships generally have multiple standard websites to promote each of the brands they sell. Dealerships can have Portal sites to consolidate these websites in one location, and to serve as their corporate hub site. These 'hub' sites are fairly simple, small and hand-coded for the most part. I designed this to serve as a static image homepage for a Portal Site. The cloud background tiles seamlessly, so the portal will not degrade on higher resolutions.

Logo Design

Texas Prison Museum

This was a project assigned during my Graphic Design undergrad studies. The Texas Prison Museum showcases the history of the Texas Penal System, from its beginnings to modern day. I wanted this logo to portray the structure of the prison system, as well as a sense of Texas pride. The 'lock and lone star' solution was chosen as the favorite by both my professor and the Museum director, though the museum ultimarly couldn't part with their current logo.

Logo Design

Harmony Strings

Harmony Strings is a musical quartet based out of Houston, Texas. This very talented group of girls played at my own wedding. The goal of this logo is to immediately associate the group's musical focus while maintaining an elegant feel.

Logo Design

Memories by Monica

This logo was done at the request of a close friend. Upon completing her college education, she is looking to start a local wedding-planning business. She wanted a logo that felt 'personal' to match her selling point, as her business would cater mostly to the smaller cities and towns north of Houston.

Logo Design

Mark Thibodeaux Logo

For my own logo, I wanted to use my initials in an inventive way, so as to cover both my name and site. Tilted slightly either way, you get either a stylized 'M' or 'T'. The ambigram also appears bold and powerful, which is just the impression that I want to leave.

Traditional Media

Self Portrait

Medium: Oil on Canvas

This was done during an oil painting college course. I wasn't particularly sad or anything, I just liked what the blue palette brought to the image. I enjoyed working with oils, and have done a couple small pieces since that course. If I had more time, I would probably have an oil painting in the works at all times. Maybe one day...

Traditional Media

Ignite

Medium: Watercolor

I'm a fan of cool colors, if you couldn't tell. Though I didn't have high hopes for watercolor, I ended up enjoying the medium a lot. Though more delicate and unforgiving than oil or acrylic, it also allows a greater range of vibrance and layering. Here, I have taken what should be a very warm scene and turned it completely around, making the piece seem almost ghostly.

Traditional Media

Study in Red - Georgia O'Keefe

Medium: Watercolor

This project involved trying to emulate a professional watercolorist. The fluidity and grace of Georgia O'Keeffe's floral paintings have always impressed me. I chose her 'Red Canna' piece to work with a warm, vivid palette. The drastic, yet flowing transitions from pale to dark colors were a challenge, but yielded a nice result.

Traditional Media

Eye Morph

Medium: Oil on Canvas

Another piece done for college credit. I chose a surrealist angle for this painting, and decided to challenge myself with a diverse palette. I normally like to limit my color choices, but here I wanted to see just how many colors I could blend together and make it work. This remains one of my personal favorites.

Other Projects

Meta Font Flag

A personal typography project, I constructed a font flag in celebration of one of my favorite font families: Meta. As the font was designed specifically for the Dutch Postal Service, I wanted the font flag to sport several postal elements - namely the stamp and stylized label. The multiple directions and sizes also serve to illustrate the versatility of the font. The default 'stainless' theme of this site uses Meta for the headings.

Other Projects

Dave Chappelle Illustration

Though I generally stick to logo design for illustrative work, this project allowed me to flex new design muscles. This was done during the height of 'Chappelle Show' fame, using a cut-paper effect. I used several different photos as source material of the comedian, so that the image couldn't be reproduced with a simple filtering effect. The expressiveness of Chappelle's face really made the image pop with little need for tweaking on my part.

Other Projects

Machinist Cult Cathedral

Buring a brief stint in post-grad video game animation course study, I engrossed myself in environmental design. This assignment involved mixing architecture from two contrasting cultures or time periods to make a unique environment. I chose to mix an ornate gothic cathedral and throw it into the smog and ironwork of the industrial-revolution era.

The tinkering engineers of my envisioned cult have turned the spires to smokestacks, the rose window into a giant fan, and inserted waste pipes in between the flying buttresses. You can see a small view of the untextured model, a half-textured view showing the repeating pavestone ground, and the finished product. Though I ultimately decided not to pursue 3D Animation, it was a fun study and taught me a great deal.
